ASHTRAY JONNY Creative Experimentation as an Independent Artist, Rapper & Producer

-

Inspired by the creative icons of hip hop’s past, with roots in North Carolina and artistic experimentation from decades back, ASHTRAY JONNY has been long-since been making music that refuses to adhere to the expectations or rules of a single genre. Noting hints of influence spanning from RnB to soul, jazz, rock and blues, ASHTRAY JONNY aspires to build a repertoire that’s eclectic, skilful and impassioned, but also to consistently maintain his clear and unwavering identity as a recognisable modern artist.

As a youth, Jonny started making music at just 8 years old. Following years of abuse and the divorce of his parents, he was ultimately pushed away from his family home, at just 15. He then found respite from his turmoil by escaping into the music of legendary creatives like Wu-Tang Clan and Kanye West, and innovation came naturally.

Jonny was recording himself rapping on a handheld phone long before this became the go-to method for indie artists. By 19, he was already building industry connections and knowledge that would further secure the foundations of his future.

Infatuated with creative expression, not just lyrically but sonically, Jonny soon realised that his vision could not truly come to life through the work of other producers. He instead embarked upon a journey that would teach him how to creatively produce his own music, how to distribute it, how to build content on platforms like YouTube, and how to ultimately start growing his audience through any means necessary.

This started with CDS, mixtapes and platforms like DatPiff, but after an 18 month transformative adventure in the Appalachian Mountains, the deep reflection and growth he experienced turned his attention back towards the value of true expression and experimentation, and what followed was a level of clarity that would drive his ambition to greater heights than ever.

In celebration of Ashtray Jonny’s versatility and authenticity combined, songs like DIE FOR YOU lay down a fearlessly heartfelt ambience and song, while tracks like Water World showcase the intricate bars and ambient fullness of a more uplifting groove and story.

Then to flip the script further still, we get earworm anthems like the mighty Smoke Alarm, capturing a perfect earworm of a melody, with an atmospheric production that’s hazy and hypnotic, alongside vocals that are confidently distinct, and impressively versatile through moments of varied flow and soulful melodic peaks alike.

Ashtray Jonny writes, produces and performs from the heart, without fear of being vulnerable and creatively uninhibited, and this quality lets his music feel relevant and stylish but also interesting, unpredictable, and inherently inspiring.

Other highlights include the multi-layered vocal downpour of a clearly experimental Money Talk. The song is enchanting from the outset, looping statements that feel relatable, evolving into snappy bars both theatrical and poignant.

Jonny blends a kind of playful creativity with something a little more like Prince or the legends who carved out other genres in the past. The mleodies and ideas, the performative charm, the highs and lows, the unique structures, all speak volumes on behalf of an artist unconfined by the rules or confines of genre and industry standards.

Ashtray Jonny’s dream is to break boundaries, to create a world where the sounds of all genres can exist within one expression – music that’s diverse yet grounded by an unshakable identity and personal truth.

As he returns to where it all started, in Greensboro, North Carolina, 2026 is far from the beginning of his journey, but it’s undoubtedly an unmissable new chapter for both Ashtray Jonny and the future of alternative hip hop.

Ashtray Jonny is open to collaborations and opportunities across the board. Find him on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram & X. Stream the music Apple or find his full repertoire on Musics.
