Zimbabwean singer and artist Arthur A Gutu notes a handful of renowned pop singers to his influences, but the immediate stylistics and the evocative embrace of his single Scars, are quick to redirect things.
This is a fine example of vocal and songwriting depth that effortlessly captivates, creating a fresh space for contemplation and wonder, and utilising just a few humble traits from the likes of folk and gospel music to really light up that approach.
Scars is a mysterious and deeply-moving single, with sublime and brilliantly unique vocals at the forefront. Fair enough, the chorus offers a definite thread back to the pop ballads and anthems of artists like James Arthur and Ed Sheeran, but that’s a smart choice when looking to connect with a broader audience. Everything else leans more notably towards the originality and alternative storytelling of acts like Hozier. There’s an artistry to the lyrics and production, to the arrangement and delivery, and in my opinion, Arthur A Gutu is onto something special with this.
