Complex orchestral layering and fiercely energising power metal – a uniquely fast-paced, intense yet melodic new sound, elevating stories of mystique and Chinese mythology. The unmatched Alterium prepare to launch their highly anticipated EP Stormrage, and it’s an intoxicating blend of storytelling and fully cinematic, all-consuming power-metal.
Alterium features the leading vocals of Nicoletta Rosellini – formerly known for her work with Kalidia, Walk in Darkness, and The Erinyes. Former band-mates Paolo Campitelli and Dario Gozzi also feature on guitars and drums respectively. Alessandro Mammola, also a member of Draconicon, joins them on guitar. Completing the line-up is Luca Scalabrin on bass, who likewise performs with the band Altair.
Founded in 2022, Alterium released their debut album Of War And Flames just last year, a project that went on to achieve millions of streams, and effectively reignite the modern audience’s passion for power metal.
Following on from their success, the four-track EP Stormrage naturally secures the Alterium appeal, carefully intertwining mystical narratives with heavy orchestral creativity that’s fully immersive and mighty.

Beginning with the soaring instrumental weight and circus-like strings of the title-track, Stormrage introduces the divinely soulful and dominant vocals of Alterium, as well as the band’s clear talent and unity at the helm. Through over four minutes of composition we get aspects of orchestral music, heavy metal, power rock, alongside the support of a choir of voices, the ferocity of live drums, and the satisfying breakdown of engaging guitar solos.
Despite the complexity of these theatrical arrangements, the songs are always well-grounded by melody and resolve, and the chorus or hook in this case is superb, wrapping up the opening track in a way that naturally leaves its essence lingering after listening.
This is followed by the single from the new EP, the unforgettable Sui. With immense up-tempo power-chords and patterns, a sincerely impressive level of musicianship and composition, this multi-layered work is invigorating to escape into, blending excitement and enchanting uncertainty or darkness, through a story that again proves completely absorbing.
By now, the Alterium voice in both artistic outlet and tone is unmistakable, and these melodies, alongside the distortion and tempo, make for a truly moving listen.
Next we get the delicate pairing of keys and acoustic guitar. The vocals are intimate but still powerful, and are ultimately stunning in this setting. The music rises up like a classic driving power ballad, performative as ever but notably more spacious and melodic instrumentally. This gives us the chance to really connect with the story and fall into the passion of the delivery. Paradise Lost is Alterium’s cover of and ode to Symphony X, and it’s an alluring, uplifting and, frankly, sensational representation of the track.
Finally, the band dive back into the title-track from their debut album Of War And Flames, wrapping up the EP with a special orchestral reminder of the intricate detail, power, and unity that drives the unique and rather faultless sound of Alterium. As we await the release of their second full-length album, this closing track brings to light the depth and exploration of the band’s music and songwriting, and the fully orchestral reimagining is euphoric as it fills the space.
Sublime vocal power and fluidity guides an impassioned and skilful group of musicians, through fascinating stories and songs both complex and satisfying, for fans of anything from power metal to pop rock and cinematic, orchestral music. These arrangements and performances are stacked high with genuine talent and an unrelenting sense of shared spirit, and with work ethic and ability seamlessly combined, Alterium are well on their way to carving out an unmissable new pathway in modern power metal.
