Alex Dutty Knock Down Ginger

-

Alex Dutty’s music moves from good to great in a fairly astonishing way, even between the walls of a single track. The title release from this album – Knock Down Ginger – makes for the perfect starting point but is far from enough to really dive deep into his work and what he’s about. The album in full is where things really stand tall.

The switch from the simple familiarity and space during the first few moments of this title track, to the explosive fusion of rock and hip hop later on – not to mention the meeting between soulful melodies and a more modern, electronically soaked RnB essence – all makes for something that quickly becomes beautifully chaotic.

It’s a multi-layered soundscape and every voice within adds something valuable and quite unexpected to the mix. Furthermore, the underlying concept is one that Dutty clearly pours his personal experiences and soul into – you get this more and more so throughout the album. It’s a playlist with depth and plenty of realness, but it’s also one with a musically brilliant level of eclecticism and impact.

Whether you’re into hard-hitting, haunting beats, melodically emotional heights, or the simple pleasure of strong bars and lyrics with substance – it’s fair to say you get a little of all of this on Knock Down Ginger. The title track is perhaps one of the more recognisable or unique songs of the collection, as stated – it’s a great place to begin if you’re new to his sound. There’s an underlying, slightly tribal feel to the beat, then you get the vocal rhythm and the sheer passion in Dutty’s voice, then you get the soulful melodic tones of the feature, and then – on top of all of this – you get some superb electric guitar hits that fill up the outer edges and add even more to the passionate and creative aura of the whole track. Originality runs free but it’s also kept relevant by clear threads of ability, truth, and professionalism. Well worth a stream.
