Rising stars and viral sensations SM6 have seen their audience-reach multiply extensively in recent months – thanks in part to the success of their superb single and video Oddity.

We were blessed with an interview with the TikTok sensations and family band, to talk all things creativity, live performance, songwriting, fame, fall-outs, and everything in between. Here’s how it went.

* * *

Hi guys – great to chat with you, thanks for the interview! Where are you all right now, and how have you been keeping busy during a tumultuous 2020?

Hi, thank you so much for having us! We just finished recording 10 songs and 4 music videos that we will be releasing before 2020 ends. And at the moment, we’re doing a lot of songwriting and creating content for social media.

Congrats on the rising success of your recent single – what a great song, with a powerful hook. What can you tell us about Oddity – what was the writing process like for you as a family, and what do you think it is about this song that makes it connect so strongly?

Thank you, this song is very personal to us so that truly means a lot. The concept of Oddity originally stemmed from a fictional movie character but the lyrics and message are from things we’ve felt or have been called in the past.

It all started when I (Isabel) wrote the lyrics and then brought it to band rehearsals to be instrumentally pieced together. This song is an anthem for all those that feel outcasted, and we believe that this song resonates strongly with people because everyone who feels different, feels connected, like they’re not alone.

What’s your favorite line from the song, and why?

“Everyone’s scared of what they don’t understand” is our favorite! We love this line because it’s so true. People automatically shut out other people or things simply because it’s unique/different.

Is there more music on the way, and does the single Oddity effectively represent the general style you’ll be sticking with, or is your approach more varied and uninhibited?

We definitely have more music coming your way! One of them even being a Christmas song. What’s really cool about our new music that we will be releasing is that they all differ in style. Oddity was along the lines of Twenty One Pilots, while one of our up coming singles is like 5SOS. Though all these songs differ in style, they have the same message of self acceptance, self love, and living life to the fullest.

Are there ever any creative disagreements within the band, and if so – how do you overcome these?

Hahaha that’s a common joke in our household! Our minds are almost in sync so there are never really any disagreements.

How long have you been active on TikTok, and other than the music, what do you think it is about your channel that has drawn such a big audience?

We’ve been on TikTok three years and counting hahaha. We’ve been on since musical.ly. We honestly don’t know what has drawn the audience we have now. We just kept posting content that made us laugh. The cool thing is that our audience has grown into a family that not only supports us, but supports each other.

Is live performance a big part of your plans, and if so – is there a dream venue or event you have in mind?

We live for performing live. Quarantine is definitely a challenge. We can’t wait to get back on the road and meet everyone face to face. And our dream venue is nothing too big… just Madison Square Garden.

What’s something about you all that most people don’t know?

Oh my, we are open books! But something people may not know about us is that we are all vegans. It’s a long story, but I don’t think we have time for that today, maybe another time.

What’s the best thing about having a bigger audience, and on the flip side – what’s been the hardest part of it all?

The best part about having a bigger audience is HAVING an audience to listen to our music. We are so grateful for everyone’s support. The worst part isn’t really a downside, but we get noticed every single time we go out in public. It’s honestly kind of fun, we pretend to be ninjas now and then.

If you could sit down for a chat with anyone at all, past or present, who would you choose – and what would you ask them about?

We would love to meet with the Jonas brothers! We found their story very fascinating after watching Chasing Happiness (not once but three times haha). We would love to hear more stories from their past and any advice they could offer.

What’s the best piece of advice you could give to those who struggle with feelings of exclusion or never fitting in?

People are more alike than different and you would be surprised at how many people feel the way you do; you’re not alone. Remember to love yourself for you, and never change. It’s the people that are different that add color to this world.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Thank you so much for having us, we really enjoyed answering your questions. Stay tune for new music, love you guys!
