His latest single Pushed is a fine example of the style his repertoire has begun to impart, this kind of distant, canned vocal fragment backed by distorted synths, rhythmic jitters, catchy refrains, and an ever-changing atmosphere and tempo that’s distinct and easy to lose yourself within.
Despite the multiple layers of unexpected detail in Pushed, the track is fairly minimalist at its core – you can hear the piano, bends of a guitar, male and female vocals intermittently, and then there’s the beat; some hits confronting, others light and quietly mixed. There’s a structure at work though, quite crucially – a chord pattern and purpose to the progression, and all of this brings character, originality, and a clear sense of awareness and ability from the studio.
As a strictly no-AI producer, Willie Alex lets creativity remain playful, expressive, and as such, that clear ability to lose himself in the process makes for a sound of substance; one that listeners can also in turn lose themselves within.
