Prior to her Valentine’s Jazz Night performance in New York this weekend, we caught an interview with esteemed singer and artist Shira Bartov, to talk about her inspiring journey from ambitious young creative to established international performer. Here’s the conversation in full.

Hi Shira, great to connect with you! To introduce things, who or what first inspired your passion for singing, for jazz and soul in particular?
I’ve been drawn to singing for as long as I can remember — it always felt like the most natural way for me to express emotion. Growing up, I was especially captivated by the power and honesty of jazz and soul music. Artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and later soul voices like Etta James and Aretha Franklin showed me that a voice can carry an entire story.
Jazz, in particular, inspired me because of the freedom inside it — the improvisation, the deep connection between musicians, and the way every performance becomes something unique. I knew very early on that this was the world I wanted to dedicate myself to.
In what ways did growing up in Israel impact your musical interests and opportunities, and what made you choose to move to New York City?
Growing up in Israel shaped me deeply as an artist. The music scene is small but incredibly passionate, and I was fortunate to train in strong institutions that pushed me to develop both technically and creatively.
Israel also gave me a sense of cultural richness — blending influences from many backgrounds — which naturally became part of my musical identity.
I chose to move to New York City because it is truly one of the world’s greatest homes for jazz. It’s a place where the music is alive every night, and where artists are constantly growing through collaboration and performance. For me, coming to New York was the next step in building an international career and being part of the highest level of the jazz community.
You blend soul and jazz seamlessly… How much came naturally, and how much was developed through studying?
I think it was a combination of both. Soul music came very naturally to me because I’ve always been drawn to emotional storytelling and expressive singing.
But jazz is something I truly developed through years of deep study — harmony, improvisation, phrasing, and the language of the tradition. My training in jazz gave me the freedom to take those soulful instincts and expand them into something more personal and creative.
Over time, my sound became a blend of both worlds: the warmth and honesty of soul, with the spontaneity and artistry of jazz.
What did you take away from your experience as a vocalist for the Israeli Air Force Band, and what do these massive national events help bring out in you as a performer?
Serving as a vocalist in the Israeli Air Force Band was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I had the honor of representing my country through music, and it was a true privilege to serve while also doing the thing I love most.
Performing in such important national events taught me discipline, stage presence, and the responsibility that comes with using art to connect people — especially in powerful public moments.

What can you tell us about the upcoming Valentine’s live show in New York, what can audiences expect?
I’m very excited about my upcoming Valentine’s Day performance in New York at ZiZi Wine Bar. It will be an intimate jazz night with a romantic atmosphere, blending classic jazz standards with soulful interpretations and some personal touches.
Audiences can expect a warm, elegant evening — music that feels timeless, emotional, and alive in the moment. Valentine’s is all about connection, and jazz is the perfect language for that.
Throughout my career, I’ve been lucky to meet incredible people and receive rare opportunities along the way — including a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music. I’m always deeply grateful for every step of this journey.
Living in New York, twelve hours away from home, can definitely be challenging in many ways, but it’s also filled with unforgettable experiences, inspiring communities, and wonderful people who make it feel meaningful. I’m excited to keep growing here, both as an artist and as a person.
