This is a track you really need to hear right now. The reasons are pretty simple; the song sets itself up for success, in my opinion. Not only does the introduction have this crisp, up close and personal presentation about it – the guitar riff, the space, the leading voice, the story-line – but in addition, the soundscape that follows continues to build itself up and break itself down in keeping with the changing emotions of the song’s lyrics. It’s a subtle but sure-fire roller-coaster through ideas and audio bliss.
Squid Cult craft their releases creatively, artistically, so the result is this unique song, with an intriguing concept – one that reaches out for your heartstrings, your soul, yet does so among a notably upbeat, uplifting soundscape. It’s a bizarre combination, and that’s what makes it so striking. It feels fresh, unheard before, yet musically familiar and comforting at the same time.
The more I listen to this, the more I love it. There’s mystery to the song, but there’s also a lot to distract you from that – this is music doing it’s best to keep you pre-occupied, to let you escape from reality. The soundscape builds tremendously well as things progress, the band showcase their superb musicianship more and more so with every moment. The latter half of the single sees the instrumentation explode into new realms of expression, enhancing the mood, bringing the energy higher, giving you space to consider the lyrics in – space, but not quiet; quiet is how it all started.
Squid Cult are a great band, musically speaking (an important way to be speaking, really, when music is the point of a band), but on top of this, they’re incredibly interesting. You don’t stumble upon too many artists or bands in the mainstream world these days who are genuinely interesting, who are unique in a non-forced manner. Baby Blue is a must-hear and I’ll be checking out anything else they send towards the world over the coming months.
