Spoken word artist Queen Majeeda takes on the depths of grief with poetry, passion, and subtle sound-design, for the initially intimate and ultimately powerful Bye-Bye Grief.
Featuring a captivating leading vocal performance from poet and storyteller Queen Majeeda, Bye-Bye Grief evolves from melancholic uncertainty to infectious brightness and possibility. The track is fascinating in its metaphorical and literal relaying of the ache of grief, and is later near-euphoric and beautiful at its celebratory peak in the final moments.
Queen Majeeda’s ability to capture the essence of grief with imagery and reflections is mighty, but so too is her ability to then build upon this and take us by the hand, through an evocative, sweeping soundscape, towards the comfort and escapism of overcoming.
Another example of Queen Majeeda’s compelling storytelling, and her seamless and smart way with bridging the gaps between the literal and the abstract, is during the track Esther. Here we’re immersed in a cinematic story, with a leading character and background soundbites that fully take you to the centre of the action.
Coming in at seven minutes in full, Esther is something of an epic audio venture, and while the scene is set from the start, the true intricacies and complexities of the story are unveiled slowly but surely throughout.
Though Queen Majeeda’s voice is unmistakable, the style of writing and performance here is completely different, highlighting the natural versatility of this contemplative and vivid writer and narrator, and helping put together a truly impressive, engaging repertoire of original spoken-word recordings.
