Great songwriting will always stand out, and sometimes, the simple stylistic approach is all that’s needed to highlight that. In this case, a catchy piano riff, short lines and boldly relatable, inspiring lyrics, help guide the ultimately euphoric celebration of Awakening towards being a timelessly great song.
BACK ON TRACK!! are an elusive UK act, and Awakening is their debut – a pop-rock single rising towards an immense anthem of togetherness and possibility. I’m reminded somewhat of The Divine Comedy, who are actually making a return this year. The sound is nostalgic, and mighty.
We begin amidst an easy-going groove and vocal style, and wind up somewhere surrounded by an impassioned choir of voices and resounding, soulful melodies, sentiments, and even a guitar solo.
It’s all subtle, brief, but effective, and the second verse holds your attention all the more so, as things fall away, and the lyrics reflect again with vulnerability and realism.
That realism is striking, we’re confronted with the impermanence of life, the mundanity of routine, and then swiftly uplifted by the opportunity and beauty of living for now, and that use of contrast is masterful – it lets the chorus of AWKANEING become one of the most blissful and addictively energising to hit the scene in recent months.
