Quirky indie-pop with an instantly distinct artistic quality. Brooklyn’s Ben Silby delivers a minimalist but soulful introduction to the brand new album Can’t Hang, and proceeds to build upon that performative quality throughout the project.
“I don’t want to be one thing, so I’ll be nothing.”
Ben’s lyrics meet with a stripped-back but colourful sense of production and groove. dirt i is a captivating opener, and the words and ideas, the build of the music, are all unique. Ben counters melodic, soulful fragments with more rhythmic rap influences, across a completely unpredictable yet satisfying arrangement – and one that’s instantly recognisable for its worthy central riff and beat.
Eight original songs and a clear diversity of style, this album has so much to unpack – so many references and musings to connect with. And all the while, the music and vocals are a pleasure to let fill the space.
my bad is more familiar, something like folk-pop of a smooth but still fitting performative flair, and another story that’s mysterious but mildly relatable in its observations and humanity. The build is again quite phenomenal, dropping in for a huge chorus, and leading well into the impressive creativity of the full album.
Ben Silby has captured a distinct sound and style entirely, and has done so with meaning, intention, and talent. can’t hang is an outstanding original album, one that aims high and hits the mark; in terms of both individuality and broader musical freedom and appeal.
