Quite possibly the most interesting and enchanting original single to grace the space around me this month – Mimi’s Revenge deliver a stunning introduction to their creative depth and performative ability, with the superb new single Dire.
Stylistically uncomplex for its single riff and slightly ambient waves underneath, Dire ultimately captivates for the unique melodic arrangement – something unpredictable but satisfying when it matters – and for the sheer, soulful and breathy embrace of that leading voice.
The poetic lyrics feel genuinely new but again accessible in their fluidity and reference – the hook in particular wraps up the dark nostalgia of the verses quite perfectly, weaving in a much more mainstream moment or chorus that naturally hangs around in the headspace.
Somewhat minimalist but perfectly executed from a production and performance angle, Dire is fascinating, alternative but worthy of a vast audience. It provides both the comforting escapism of intimate, atmospheric singer-songwriter bliss, and the more unique contemplation space required to really inspire a listener, and to provoke thought.
