Genre-fusion and quirky storytelling, a hearty dose of intention and some stylish free-playing – an eclectic album, inspired by all things jazz, rock, country. Paul Cann’s latest album feels like an uninhibited ode to creative freedom, and celebrates the joy of that from start to finish.
Things begin with a mellow jazz arrangement for Momentum, before Egos and Weirdos quickly takes us to a more intimate acoustic space, with a higher energy and a folk-rock anthemic kind of vibe. The lyrics are intriguing, unusual, a key aspect of the non-instrumental side of this album.
Then there’s the country pop softness and catchy melody of What Does It Mean To You? A heartfelt and evocative title-track, and a moment at which these words and ideas, the ambiances, suddenly feel very personal and impactful for the listener. It’s a pleasure to let play, and this is impressively true for the whole album, in fact.
Genre is unnecessary as a label, the music is grounded in playfulness and creative outbursts akin to each story or theme. There’s even an explosive rock track to experience in This Is Your God, and a level of provocative confrontation, but it still fits the quiet contemplation and vocal style of the overall project perfectly well.
