Huge vocals and heartfelt songwriting, a clear sense of rising anticipation and emotion – an impassioned ode to a broken heart. Singer and songwriter Craig O’Keeffe masters the craft with meaning and power, for Without You.

Hugely evocative from the start thanks to this piano and vocal introduction to a deeply reflective and vulnerable song, Without You then builds up through a fairly unique instrumental realm – finding its groove later on amidst a kind of nostalgic big-band rock aura. The drumline is heavy, eighties-esque and accompanied by soulful strings, bass, and harmonies.

In structure and writing, in the progression from these introspective verses to the boldness and power of the hook, Without You seems to fit well amidst the Teddy Swims and Rag’n’Bone Man corner, but that’s a fleeting observation when you really get into the meat of this track. The string section for one, the intensity of the drums, the smooth fluidity and authenticity, even humility, of the voice, and the more personal revelations of the lyrics – this all leans towards a distinct and mildly synth-pop-kissed kind of alternative sound, and that variety is much welcomed.

Boldly distinct but also relevant from a mainstream perspective, Without You is a huge single, a relatable but original take, with interesting production that could really come to life in a live visual and orchestral setting. Craig O’keeffe lets genuine emotions guide the way, and as such, the connection between the mighty expression of the voice and the lyrics is undeniable. I look forward to hearing more.
