Singer and songwriter Donna Brooks keeps the poetry and acoustic honesty of folk music alive and well, with the evocative melodies and cleanly-mixed vocals of her new album It’s Just Rain.
Beginning with the catchy organic groove and story of Fall For You, the project is off to a strong start – nostalgic in style but original in songwriting, achieving its own status as somewhere between the likes of Joni Mitchell, Natalie Imbruglia, and Ani Difranco. The sound is purely gentle though, the ideas honest and ultimately hopeful, and before long the music is simply Donna’s own.
Cascading harmonies and subtly changing instrumental leads add dynamic to the shifting playlist, the likes of This is The Ride adopting a lower tone and a fuller instrumental production, but essentially holding tightly to that central theme of possibility and overcoming. The very title of It’s Just Rain resounds throughout all seven songs, and the album in full attempts to present listeners with a lasting degree of hope and comfort in the face of difficulty.
