Unique songwriting, well-rooted amidst the inspiring strength of timeless pop-rock, lights up an eclectic and impressive lifelong repertoire from Gary Randman.
Having been writing songs as a hobby for several years, Gary initially let family life take the wheel for the most part, but now emerges as a distinct songwriter of our time – with a vast catalogue of original music to share.
Inspired by the breadth of creativity spanning throughout the sixties, seventies and eighties, Gary Randman is a songwriter above all else, devoting his time to the writing and intricate weaving of creative webs that come from intertwining music, melody, and concept, throughout a plethora of original works.
Let’s Talk About It kicks things off on a welcomed high, noting quickly engaging production – an arrangement of quirky bass, organic keys, drums, guitars, and a songwriting style that feels remisncent of the alternative hits from The Beatles.
As things build, the riff falls away for a more thoughtful hook, brightness is replaced by contemplation, and we return through this cycle for an ultimately impressively listen. Everything from the strength of the riff to the melodic shifts and topical lyricism feels noteworthy as the work of a songwriter with a clear balance of passion and experience at the helm.
Elsewhere from the recent demos is the more mellow yet equally distinct Once In A While. Here we get a full production once again, but a smooth vocal thread, fewer lyrics, and a clear sense of something poetic and personal to drive things forward. Always the melody and chord patterns unite for a genuinely original structure and sound that’s both timeless and refreshing in its entirety.
The chorus here is particularly evocative, feeling like the cinematic accompaniment to some closing scene, with waves crashing and a story concluding. The song explores the familiar concept of the one that got away, and does so with a joyful bounce but a mildly contrasting calmness that lets the emotions take precedence.
On that note, You Deserve The Best of Life takes these qualities to greater heights still – a piano-ballad of sorts, with characterful bass once again, and lyrics that feel boldly personal but broadly accessible. The song also features an unexpected change in tempo, a structural shift for a high-octane, optimistic hook, and while this feels brilliantly original, it also feels like a nod to the increasingly distinct songwriting style of Gary Randman.
One final highlight from Gary’s extensive repertoire, is a song that delves into the all-too-familiar tale of uncertainty or doubt when considering how a significant other truly feels about us. My Sweet Love has a sultry simplicity to it, great musicianship breaking up these short bars of melody, and a featured voice that’s mellow yet impassioned at all the right moments.
The questions resound, the doubt machine whirring away at a recognisable rate, and we wrap up this experience with the rather stark and striking lyric ‘Stop wasting my time’.
As a committed and consistent songwriter, Gary Randman continues to seek out creative producers and vocalists to help bring more of his original songs to life. He also has a number of new songs in development still, for which you can find previews over on Soundcloud. Follow Gary Randman on Facebook & Instagram.
