Damnit Doll Storm

Organic music – REAL music – a live band with a distinct and timeless sound, and a surprisingly eclectic array of styles interwoven amidst their original songwriting. Alabama five-piece Damnit Doll lure you in with hypnotic arrangements, expressive and emotive vocals, and lyrical poetry that naturally enchants.

With instrumentals that feel like a blast from Americana’s past, delicate but impassioned vocals, and lyrics that read like poetry, Damnit Doll carve out an engaging and distinct lane as a modern act. Their storytelling and acute affinity for a strong melody proves increasingly alluring throughout their growing repertoire.

If you’re new to the band’s music, their latest single Storm just so happens to make for the perfect introduction. We’re welcomed by all of this, an organic and bluesy arrangement, humble to bold vocals, a sultry groove, poetic imagery, and it’s all topped off with a huge chorus. The hook drops in with the fullness of a rock set-up, the passion peaks – a crescendo highly anticipated, and more than satisfying enough to do the progression justice.

Prior to the this latest single, Damnit Doll maintained the organic and guitar-led vibe, but showcased versatility in everything from tempo to genre. Consider Slide, a meandering bassline and clear-cut lyrical scenes, a faster pace and a slightly funky to disco-kissed overtone. The lyrics and the voice hold close to the Damnit Doll essence though, and such versatility proves an exciting quality of the band the further into their catalogue you delve.

Also released this year were the singles Inevitable and The Wanderer. The first is a fine example of Damnit Doll’s rockier roots – distorted power chords and pop-punk vocal-grit meet with the fullness and ferocity of the new genre, to effectively shine light on yet another side to this impossible to pigeon-hole band.

Then for The Wanderer, the very opposite of distortion and pace takes hold – a delightfully calming acoustic guitar song, with modest harmonica and divinely intimate, breathy vocals from our front-woman.

The poetry resounds here, subtle inflections reinforcing the emotion of the story and the delivery. The unplugged nature of this one connects in a beautiful way, particularly when compared to the fire and tempo of Inevitable. There’s even a hint of something Kate Bush-like to the evolving vocal melody and theatrical progression.

Great songwriting, established musicianship, and always an engaging performance. Damnit Doll are an interesting and impressive new band – worth checking out both across streaming platforms and in the live venues of and around Birmingham, Alabama.
