Instantly an indie-nostalgic gem for those with strong connections to a simpler era – Soft Yes bring back the quiet and canned vocals, quickly-picked guitar notes, and hyper-active rhythms, with the upbeat but delicate and surprisingly brief Odd Numbers.
Capturing the moment and expressing their ideas and melodies for only the essential doses of time, Soft Yes perform Odd Numbers for less than two minutes in full, but it’s instantly something of a doorway back to the dawn of modern indie rock. At the same time, once you’ve calmed down from the reawakening of the good old days, the title and concept of Odd Numbers starts to work its own kind of magic.
Given the brief timespan, the lyrics are limited here, and the voice is so profoundly nonchalant that you may find yourself digging into theories and ideas that aren’t really present. However, that’s the joy of good music, in my view, Taking something from it that’s yours alone, that makes you want to listen again, for your own little journey back through memories or feelings or contemplations.
Odd Numbers is a refreshingly humble introduction to a band who are clearly carving out a worthy lane as indie musicians. Hopefully there’s plenty more music to follow.
