Maverick Smith With Friends and Imperfections

-

Neatly-packed as ten original tracks with a fiercely anthemic opener, With Friends & Imperfections is a classic rock album at its core, but offers a fresh leading character, an often hyper sense of pace, and a series of unexpected stories.

Noting hints of influence amidst the likes of Supergrass, Maverick Smith start off this journey on a likable high – Holding On pairing those born to perform rock vocals with a great guitar, drum and bass combo, and even weaving in some fast-fingered keys for a twist of honky-tonk to nostalgic rock and roll.

Things then mellow out for a big-band, horn-led arrangement of Do I? – an all-together-now chorus that feels distinctly more soulful by nature. Versatility is already a strength, and without doubt, the live show from Maverick Smith is where these songs will really come alive.

Next up is a strong riff and some dismissive subject matter that naturally appeals. A dash of grunge and early indie-rock unites across this hazy platform of short lines and subtle strings. We’re even leaning towards the likes of blues rock and country to a degree.

Fresh vocals add dynamic but the instrumental power-chord set-up maintains the punk-rock pace and distinct instrumental vibe of the album, as Break My Heart offers a memorable bass-line and a smooth hook resolve. Then things get all the more dramatic and arena-ready, for the quirky and scene-setting highlight that is Spookshow.

Through This Tonight presents a kind of early 2000’s pop-rock indie essence that’s calm and comforting in both lyric and melody. Then there’s a stylish tumble of drums, for the return of the raspy and impassioned rock vocal, in a heartfelt and thoughtful For The Kids.

Towards the end, Health and Politics is another highlight, perhaps for its rockier twist on the classic Beatles format and paired vocals, and also for its contrasting of the joyful melody and the doomsday lyrics. Then there’s a country rock classic anthem and undeniably catchy hook, in the form of the bluesy personality and pulse of Dirty Teeth.

Maverick Smith deliver a timeless collection of hits with this album. The project is brilliantly eclectic, memorable and enjoyable, with unexpected stories, plenty of dynamic between vocal leads and moods, and an overall optimistic and uplifting energy that lingers after listening. The album wraps up with an again euphoric celebration, as Thinking Of You provides one more undoubtable crowd-pleaser of a rock and roll gem.
