Genre-fusing metal-core devotee Haris Cizmic returns this season with an explosive to boldly evocative and acoustic three-track EP, with aptly apocalyptic artwork.
In The Chaos I Return sees the creative initially take a fresh turn towards grind-core, picking up the tempo and intensity of the musicianship at the heart of the work, and carving out a rightfully chaotic chasm of volume in the process.
Emerging complete with a set of visuals depicting the musicality behind it, the title track from In The Chaos I Return showcases the talent and indeed ferocity of the project’s sound and new direction throughout an impressively versatile three minutes and forty-four seconds.
Uniquely structured, In The Chaos I Return moves quickly from atmospheric to intense, later adding a haunting melodic moment, before we re-enter the immense pace and power of the former arrangement.
Following this, musicianship guides all the more evocatively, as we hear the unexpected acoustic take of Tea Party’s Psychopomp. Upfront acoustic guitar and a rise-and-fall melody akin to the stripped-back grunge days of era’s past rains down with tuneful and passionate conviction.
A beautiful arrangement, completely leftfield in terms of the bar set by the opener, but artistically clever and in keeping with this apocalyptic realm of storytelling we find ourselves lost within. Haris’ voice sounds both intimate and futuristic in this setting, the performance soaked in vulnerability and longing, the brightness of the instrumentation growing as the lyrics fall further into this definitive end of fading away.
Wrapping things up is a string-led cinematic arrangement in the form of True Faith – Acoustic. Canned vocals again blend the intimate and the disconnected, as we follow a delicate finger-picked pattern towards optimistic resolve. Hints of familiarity emerge in the recognisable cover, and ultimately we’re at the point of the sun rising on this chaotic experience – the embrace of faith working its magic as we hear these personal details from our protagonist’s past.
Defiantly unique and rather fearless in bridging the gap between the most intense distorted music and the more charming softness of acoustic and melodic satisfaction, In The Chaos I Return is a fascinating project, which feels profoundly more vast than its three-track limit appears to imply. Everything from the set-up to the performance and production breathes cinematic storytelling and intention into the creative space.
