Distinctly British Indie Rock pours through with high energy and a fine fusion of the anthemic and quirky. Billy Brazier recaptures the pace and vulnerability of artists like Jamie T, with his raw and captivating album What It Is You Know.
Junk Food is the opener and is all of this, an organic rock arrangement with characterful vocals and a strong structural presence that holds attention well throughout.
Eight original tracks in full, What It Is You Know continues to explore this style, but varies in set-up from the distorted and fast to the more melodic and dreamy. Just Because Why Not is a fine example of the latter, setting a calmer mood and ultimately letting the lyrics connect on a more personal and revealing level.
Despite the nostalgia of the sound, Billy Brazier manages to keep things contemporary and individual from a writing perspective. The likes of Kill The Internet reach out with equal parts literal and metaphorical reflections that feel decidedly poignant.
There’s a lot to unwrap within the walls of this album, the closing track Here’s a Song adding a final dose of stylistic variety as Brazier proceeds to conclude a heartfelt collection of songs and stories that delve openly into the highs and lows of everyday life. It’s a unique style within the current scene, and there are some beautiful and gritty moments alike scattered throughout the project.
