Tricia Lo Senses

-

Designed to inspire and connect with women for its celebration of the self, Tricia Lo’s brand new EP is a fiercely passionate collection of songs, the likes of which transcend the walls of genre and naturally empower and uplift listeners.

Committed to exploring the feelings of detachment and disconnection that women experience throughout life, Senses proceeds to deliver a level of unity and acceptance that’s intoxicating. Consider the tribal rhythmic boldness and power of Remember My Name, an intensely distorted anthem of multiple vocal layers and artistic warping to really bring home the central theme and self-belief. It’s a mighty introduction to a fresh journey, from an artist who always makes sure to balance personality and presence with a clear sense of consciousness and wonder.

The idea that it’s OK to feel whatever you feel resounds throughout this project. The style varies, as per the Tricia Lo freedom of creativity, but always we return to this sense of taking pride in our individualities and unique traits.

Consider the unpredictable shift to I’ve Finished My Song, a partly familiar but partly dissonant arrangement of sweeping synths and playful design, all supporting a breathy and emotional leading voice as it details this journey to self-discovery.

For Hallucinating Paradise, we enter a sultry stomp of a groove, breathy and intimate vocals guiding us through a haunting yet seductive realm of aptly psychedelic sounds and thoughts. For me, this feels like a highlight, the intense production and deeply poignant lyrics reminiscent of the drama and identity of acts like Raye. As ever though, Tricia Lo maintains her own artistic voice throughout.

Stylishly unexpected rhythms are a huge part of the sound of Senses. So too are these layered, often call-and-response vocals – something that reaches an intriguing crescendo for the closing track It Ain’t Love.

Romantically minded and with smooth bass and expressive, gritty vocals at the forefront, It Ain’t Love creates a sense of late-night intimacy and passion that wraps up the collection with another memorable hit of stylistic prowess. There’s even a keys solo during the final quarter, and all the while these lyrics cascade and collide around us, reinforcing the interwoven ideas and influential sentiments of the EP.

EP out August 14th. Find Tricia Lo on Instagram & YouTube.
