Rapper and songwriter Malleous brings a homemade edge to modern hip hop, with the dreamy and intimate single Deja Vu.
Vocally distinct and somewhat dissonant in flow and overall mix, Deja Vu stands tall on the strength of its underlying beat, and indeed the smooth vibes and the clear strength of the second vocal part. Suddenly things fall into place here, lower-toned and seductive; as per the mellow and sultry beat and surrounding soundscape.
It’s a track that slowly tightens its grip throughout a near four-minute progression, the bars growing more impressive and interesting during the latter half, and the whole energy and presence, particularly the hook, standing tall in a memorable way thanks to the contrast between sections.
Always we return to this recognisable concept and looping vocal part. It’s an unusual performance and mix, a little like two artists arbitrarily united in a live setting. No doubt the Malleous voice will prove a calling card across future releases.
Releasing February 17th, for Malleous’ birthday. Check out Malleous on Instagram & Twitter.
