Other-worldly production traits and distorted, homemade indie rock vibes unite throughout the bass-led emo-rap fusion of genres that is alt suicide’s latest single.
Musically eclectic in both its multi-layered presence and the sheer evolution from one moment to the next, 3am provides an initially gritty rock vocal lead, and later a jazz-kissed meandering bass line, alternating between clean and fuzzy mixing, before adopting a melodic rap identity as the story and overall groove take the reins.
Showcasing cleanly presented vocals that ultimately captivate for their poetic intimacy and profound contemplation alike, there’s a touch of the late Mac Miller to the writing style, increasingly provocative and interesting, calm yet concerned with the role of the self at this time.
There’s also something of an experimental shoegaze vibe to the guitar sound and many of the effects during the final quarter; yet another touch of versatility.
The whole thing marches to the beat of its own drum, but still manages to deliver a clear sense of recognisable purpose and tone, which proves easy to pinpoint on future listens. It will be appealing to hear where else the music takes alt suicide in the coming months and years.
