Immediately warming with its acoustic strum and harmonics, Darren Wallis calms the soul with a breathy and poetic Reassurance.
‘Lately I feel the earth turning’ starts off the writing and melodic outpouring in a familiar, comforting way – more than meeting the lightness and hopeful implications of the soundscape. This opening line though, is followed by a less expected ‘and I get so insecure’, and from here on in Wallis proceeds to lay bare a level of vulnerability and personal truth that’s refreshing to connect with.
Reassurance is not purely the artist providing this concept to a listener or significant other, but a way of asking for it back – seeking security and peace. It’s a love song at its core, but the way Wallis has framed it feels new, and this contrasts stylishly with the recognisable overall style of this folk-pop performance.
Lovely vocals, softly characterful and easy to pinpoint as Darren Wallis. The single also features a much-welcomed guitar solo during the latter half, seeing things lean towards the soul-rock ambiances of Clapton and the like from not too long ago. Nicely done.
