Creatively blending contemporary production with a ukulele lead and notably characterful vocals, Kaylee Patterson hits the indie scene with style and intention.
Showcasing an optimistic soundscape, a stylish manner of sound design that builds up these layers of colour and positivity level by level, Other Side goes on to display some increasingly addictive songwriting.
Not only are the lyrics immediately interesting, deeply personal yet vague enough to be accessible, they’re also structured in a manner that effectively satisfies. Kaylee takes just enough influence from mainstream music, and fuses this with multiple layers of individuality, and the result is a quirky yet emotive, instantly recognizable new song.
As an introduction to her work, this single does everything it needs to. Those unique vocals are a huge part of her sound, as is the ukulele – it’s subtle, but it lets you get a strong vision of the live show – and ultimately, the songwriting will, hopefully, be a consistently engaging, appealing thread throughout her releases.
It’s always a pleasure to listen to new artists who are effectively paving their own way in an uninhibited yet still professional manner. I look forward to hearing more.
