DJ and artist Yaz is making waves across the streaming and live scenes alike. With 2020 looking set to be his biggest year yet, we caught an interview to find out more about his journey so far and his hopes for the future. Here’s how it went.

Did you always want to be a musician when growing up?
No! When I was growing up the only thing I wanted to do was be an actor. I even studied at the Australian College of theatre and television after graduating high school. It wasn’t until I finished up there that I started taking music seriously. Best decision I ever made.
When growing up did you have the support from your family regarding your music career?
My parents are very traditional. It was hard for them to comprehend my decision. They wanted me to have a safe and stable career and they knew it wasn’t going to be easy to crack. It wasn’t until they started seeing results that my dad really started backing my decision. They just wanted what was best for me at the time.
You have over 80 thousand followers on your Facebook page! What advice would you give others that are trying to become a social media icon?
95 thousand followers actually! The most important thing is to understand what your fans or the audience want to see. Keep things relevant and relatable. Your fans want to see who you really are and want to put a personality to whatever content you are releasing. When I post something up on my Facebook page I ask myself “would I interact with this post if I saw it?”
Do you have any music in the works for 2020?
I do! I have written and recorded well over 30 songs for this year already. Right now though we are just deciding what the next release will be. It’s all about playing your cards the right way!
What process do you prefer, writing music or performing live?
Definitely performing! The adrenaline that rushes through your body when the crowd reacts to you is something special. There’s nothing like controlling the emotions of thousands of people at the same time. On the other hand though writing to me is like therapy… if I’m ever having a bad day I know that a studio session will flip that around.
Define success?
I don’t remember where I heard this but it definitely stuck with me. In my form of work, success is walking into a room of strangers and not having to introduce yourself.
What are your thoughts on Instagram removing likes?
My thoughts? Who cares haha. Too many people fall in the trap of Instagram. To me likes mean nothing and your reach means everything. That’s what people should be focusing on.
What can we expect from you in 2020?
2020 is the year that all my plans become reality. Expect allot of online content and not just music. I want to start my vlogs showcasing my performances and and hopefully with the help of my PR manager and booking agents I’ll be able to do one show a week. Also Currently working on a new radio show proposal that I’m hoping we can syndicate and broadcast world wide. Damn this is going to be a busy year!
