Australian duo April & The Drift emerge with a uniquely captivating sound amidst a series of recent singles. For those new to their work, Good Company makes for a striking introduction.
Leading with a delicate soundscape, organic and calming, a jazz rhythm and flickers of piano in the distance, the song is made complete by a surprisingly quiet and breathy vocal. The audio in full has the effect of creating a cinematic experience for listeners, guiding you down these smokey back streets as hints of a story-line and imagery rain down softly around you.
Everything about this fuses nostalgia and contemporary creative freedom in a powerful way. Where classic jazz meanders in its own smooth and fairly unconfined manner, there’s a definite touch of structure here – changes in melody and instrumentation – which adds dynamic and helps really hold tight to your interest throughout.
As you make your way through the rest of their catalogue, this sound becomes familiar, recognisable, and comforting in being so. There’s very little, if anything, quite like this around right now. Heavy hits of blues intertwine with a free-flowing jazz core and these raspy, dreamlike vocals to really paint a whole new picture.
Brilliant, a sound all of their own, yet still musically impressive and compelling enough to draw a crowd. Get On That Train is another highlight. Well worth stumbling upon.
