The opening and title-track from the new Twin Lakes album In The Valley is a softly stunning, acoustic offering – one that quickly engages, energizes, and entrances listeners with its organic folk purity and captivating use of poetic story-telling.
What begins as gently hypnotic, soon evolves to become surprisingly passionate, seeing the vocalist lead us in a compelling manner towards the drop to the full-band set-up – suddenly powerful, suddenly explicit; though ‘sudden’ is a little misleading, as the song paves the way skillfully towards all of this.
I’m reminded of Joshua James, the familiarity of the folk sound combined with genuinely revealing, refreshing and new lyricism, and that incredibly authentic and satisfying level of emotion and vulnerability in the voice.
There’s a realness to it all, a sense of character and intention, so much so that the entire thing has an addictive quality – it leaves you wanting to head back to the start, to listen over once again, to keep up with the fast-pace a little more effectively; thus painting a clearer picture in your mind of precisely what this is all about. And you won’t regret it when you do.
Brilliant music, fantastic songwriting, and a band clearly born to do this. The rest of the album is equally fascinating and a pleasure to listen through. Hopefully these guys head to the UK at some point.
