C Wired Baby Prime Became Baby Blue

-

Out of the ether floats a root note on synth, backed up by swells of slide guitar and then panned acoustic tickles at one ear. It plays a deceptively complex part which is still easy on said ear.

The kind of sixties prog chord progression that feels instantly classic develops beneath a drawling, baritone, country rock vocal that sits amidst some sweet, sweet production (from Addison Smith) that elevates the unlikely-monikered Baby Prime Became Baby Blue to a heady level of consumption that this reviewer found delicious! It’s a subtle delight, giving the softest, most articulate of foundations for the lead vocal to grandstand from. Wisely, the vocal never explodes, allowing just the right amount of character and colour to bleed into the performance.

The harmony voices around the sustained croon of ‘….baby blue’ are something to behold. If Jim Morrison hadn’t checked out of his tenure on this planet quite so early, I could imagine him turning in something like this in his later years.

Four minutes swim by far too quickly and I’m left wondering what on earth the lyric means. And guess what? I couldn’t care less. I buy into it totally. I wonder further what is meant by ‘window boys’? Nope, still don’t care! How wonderful to be flummoxed and simultaneously delighted…

Self-mythologising, ethereal, beautiful and accomplished in equal measure, Baby Prime Became Baby Blue is an absolute delight.
