Fresh from his brand new EP, Monster makes for a powerful introduction to the artist and rapper that is Xero.
Fusing a thoughtful and passionate hip hop core with a brilliantly unexpected soul-rock structure and sample, the track is nothing like you’d predict it to be, yet it’s everything you could hope for in an original, alternative and addictive song.
That word addictive works well, proving all the more relevant as the sub-two-minute track and video progress. For such a short run-time, the experience leaves an immeasurable mark. You head back to trace these bars along a little more intently, to try to bridge that gap between the calm spoken word and the soulful, gospel-soaked and mildly tribal, anthem-like hook melody, and with each new listen some greater detail of depth makes itself known.
In recent years, it seems that the amount of new music emerging each week is growing exponentially – it’s becoming harder and harder to stand out. Granted, the caliber of music seems higher in some respects – the competition greater, but the audience more accessible and receptive to talent. Put all of this together, then consider the underlying subject matter at work here, and Xero effectively storms through the barrier that is the world’s additional new releases – offering something beautifully fresh, yet also respectfully nostalgic in a number of likable ways.
A fascinating new track, from an EP well worth the time it takes to stumble upon. I look forward to seeing where the music takes Xero over the coming years.
