Following the release of three new singles, we caught an interview with singer and songwriter Kate Bishop to find out more about here musical journey to date. Here’s how it went.

Hi Kate – thanks so much for the interview. Just to give a little background, how long have you been writing songs, and how would you describe yourself as an artist?
Hi 🙂 Well, I feel like I always had it in me, since I’ve been a little girl I was walking around and singing some melodies from my head to myself. For me it is one of those things that chose me. As an artist I would describe myself as world eclectic.
How did you first get into music?
I always knew I have to do something about it, however in my family this idea wasn’t accepted very well. But by the age 18 I was able to form a band, we were playing heavy metal with lyrical vocal , like it was popular on the underground scene back then. Something like Evanescence, but more intense. I always knew that it wasn’t my style really, and I had to go in a more pop direction.
Who or what would you say is your main inspiration when making music?
Drama and trauma. Unfortunately 🙂 also sex is a big one, sometimes love. Emotions, basically human nature. I don’t think I’ve written any songs when I was at peace.
What’s the songwriting process like for you – how do you get started, how do your lyrics and melodies come about, and how much editing is involved?
It’s always different. Most of my melodies are just appearing in my mind, and then if it sticks to me then it’s easy to develop the rest. Some of my songs take years to develop, and some can take a couple of hours 🙂
Is live performance an important part of what you do, and how do you find the performance aspect when compared to the writing or recording processes?
I am scared to death of live performances, and I don’t do it that much. Recording process depends on the people I am working with. If you connect as an artist to your producer, the process is easy 🙂
From My Mom is a stunning song, a personal favourite from the year so far. How did this one come about?
Thank you 🙂 I had a fight with my mom over the phone one day. After we hung up I was trying to imagine, what would she say to me. So that’s how this song got written. It’s basically my mom’s words to me.
Do you always write from personal experience or does fiction come into play sometimes?
Always personal 🙂
Do you produce your own music?
I have done it, but I prefer to work with the producer, just because 2 heads are better than one.
What comes to mind if I ask you to name one of the best songs ever written?
I think it would be Happy Birthday. Everyone knows it.
Why do you think that song resonates so strongly?
Words are easy to remember + catchy melody + everyone can relate.
What are your thoughts on the mainstream music world today?
It’s great. It’s evolving. I wish though we would have new metal back. Good old fashion Limp Bizkit types of bands.
What do you hope people get from your music?
Peace, support, empowerment.
What’s something you want to work on or improve in the near future?
My discipline 🙂
What’s something about Kate Bishop that most people don’t know?
I have no idea. I try to express myself to the the fullest 24/7. It requires complete trust to the world. Well actually I got one. I can feel energy of other people. So if somebody is negative about me in disguise, I know it.
What’s the bigger picture – what are your hopes and plans as a creative over the coming months and years?
Recording an amazing EP.
Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Yes. People! Please be happy 🙂
