V.E.N! Waking Up In The Night

-

Soaring distorted guitar riffs blend a kind of indie-rock personality with something a little more Americana in its charm and story, its melody and vulnerability.

V.E.N! tops off a strong musicality with deeply poetic lyricism and a voice that’s refreshingly distinct and unfiltered, for the original stories and powerfully contrasted moments of new EP Waking Up In The Night.

Connection is a strong introduction to this fascinating blend of melodic power pop and harder indie rock. The song rolls through like waves of softness then intensity, and all the while our leading artist V.E.N! meanders in equal versatility from calm to gritty outbursts.

The lyrics are complex, the sort that take a little longer to unpack, and this makes the music all the more addictive. Connection is clearly relatable, this idea of desiring to really talk to and know someone, and being met with silence, but that’s an over-simplified account of what V.E.N! has written, and it’s possible to start with that simple Connection throughout Break The Compass and then all six of these songs.

A colourful, interesting and enjoyable listen, which has hints of inspiration from indie rock and performative music, but which ultimately maintains its own vibrant sense of originality at all times.
