Music softly swayed by and composed amidst the waves of the ocean. A beautifully peaceful creative process, captured in a floating studio that was Vivienne Aerts’ sailboat, traversing the Dutch waterways in the summer of ’25.
Current is an aptly-titled, organic musical project, comprised of deeply contemplative poetic lyrics, melodies, harmonies, instrumental layers, which slowly but surely meander from quiet and intimate to enchanting, impassioned, and impactful.
Current begins with the flowing melodies and layers of Nothing Needs The World, a striking listen for both its conceptual core and the subtle jazz nuance and soul of Vivienne’s performance and arrangement. The album then continues down this unique sonic pathway of expression, with songs that are consistently unique, but grounded by human emotion, melodic resolve, and the united talents of a handful of focused musicians.
Featuring modest doses of saxophone, keys, guitars, electronics, bass and harmonica, Current is a hypnotic and deeply soothing listen, from which tracks like Touching The Light present a kind of immersive representation of life on the water – the ambiance is atmospheric and engaging, the vocal fragments brief but provocative, and the track an experimental touch of poignancy, as we fall deeper under the spell of Current.
Eleven songs make up this album from Vivienne Aerts, something like alternative neo-jazz, with hints of Eva Cassidy, Chet Baker, to the voice and songwriting, but a more alternative edge of electronic design in unison, to keep things secure in this new artistic arena.
Watch It Show is a fine example of that blending of traits, while the softer waves and breaths of songs like Gathered Here present more of that waterway aura – a dreamy fusion of cinematic escapism and thoughtful, profoundly human wonder and charm.
