Lucas Marina Consumed

-

Lucas Marina lets honest emotions fuse with smooth beats and melodies on this latest album. Consumed offers a string of delicately passionate vocals, heavy yet mellow paced beats, and lyrics that deal directly with personal turmoil and modern life.

An easy highlight from the new album is DrinkFromMeAndLiveForever, a song that starts out well and continues to build in a refreshing way throughout. Even at barely past the two minute mark, there are moments of varied melody, beat refrain, and even rap, that help create something structurally intentional yet still always rhythmically entrancing and connected enough to really envelop the listener.

Elsewhere on the project, contemporary living pours through amidst further indications of Lucas Marina as an individual. Tracks like Wraith hit with a little more impact, a stronger beat that picks up the pace, yet still you get this tired and almost whispered vocal delivery, and these again eclectically set-up sections, throughout all of which Marina presents his dreamlike scenes and simple lines in a manner suggestive of an artist lost entirely within the calmness of the ambiance.

This arena of synths and sounds is a common calling card on this album – thick beats are contrasted by gentle soundscapes, and indeed by Marina’s own tentative and quietly confident performance style. There’s an air of mystery to the whole thing, of darkness and uncertainty.

The album’s title track is another that sees the intensity rise a little, and with this comes a quietly haunting yet anthem-like track that’s perhaps one of the most memorable on the project – thanks to this array of riffs and this breathy, alternative choir-like chorus.

Worthy production meets with subtle creativity and a clear understanding of today’s hip hop landscape and the ambient choices isolated music fans and deep thinkers tend to connect with. Consumed brings through a conceptual playlist that lays bare an artist showcasing a certain balance between that which is deeply personal, and that which is a little more vague and broadly accessible.
