From the atmospheric to the outright gritty and groovy, this album encapsulates an artistic dedication to music’s history, celebrating the unforgettable blues influence of legends like Otis Redding and Robert Johnson, while delivering a timeless and characterful lead from Will Foulke himself.
Featuring catchy old-school recordings like the sleepy Dylan-esque Dropped Out, with quiet vocals and snappy guitar riffs scattered between the likes of Still Alive and the surf-side waves of One Notch, Charleston Blues is a modest but colourful album, and is deeply nostalgic for its beats and reverb-soaked appearance combined.
The closing track Ran Away is a peak example of all of this, a dreamy and hopeful organic sound, with distant, intriguing lyrics furthering that ethereal, yesteryear inspiration.
Perhaps more of a vibe than an individual set-list, Charleston Blues takes a fresh air of ambient design, and offers a sweeping moment of escapism for blues fans past and present.
