Villasante stylishly fuses the electronic delicacy of the xx, with a gorgeous string of vocals and some deeply thoughtful, intimate lyrics on this latest single release. Rather than picking apart the stylistic details though, or aiming straight for genre labels, what you’re likely to notice about The Render, above everything else, is how beautiful the songwriting is.
Granted, the performances reflect the writing gorgeously – a minimalist, spacious and softly entrancing soundscape accompanies these intimately gathered voices as they all but whisper the intricacies of the story. A hypnotic guitar riff circles around you, a light beat and the equal lightness of those voices keeps a level of humanity at the forefront – and without taking anything away from the natural rhythm and flow of the surrounding music. On the contrary, the voices work in unison with everything else, so this feels like a natural, artistic moment of expression – one that has fortunately been superbly performed and professionally produced so as to let the listener really escape among it.
Villasante’s organically deep yet emotionally loaded voice, combined with this creatively free approach to music, helps make this a mesmerising and deeply calming listening experience. Well worth exploring at volume.
