Vacation Bible School nvrgivup

-

Stop the press for this one – Friday’s biggest track, an indie gem of a hit that’s as distinct as it is impassioned and beautifully satisfying. Vacation Bible School present a unique chemistry of traits, throughout their intoxicating indie rock anthem nvrgivup.

Far from what you may be expecting by the title and band name, this is an indie anthem with a clear sense of personality. I’m reminded of the likes of unexpectedly creative treasures of the historical vault – You Get What You Give, Drinking in LA, Steal My Sunshine, Peach Scone – except that nvrgivup isn’t stylistically similar to any of these songs – it’s just an unprecedented dose of energy and reflection that captures the feelings of the moment beautifully.

Built around a simple acoustic folk introduction, Vacation Bible School intrigue from the outset, and quickly introduce a brilliant opening line and simultaneously raspy, expressive and recognisable leading voice. ‘Hurts, don’t it?‘ is massively impactful as the first lyrical moment, and is followed by a series of equally gritty and honest contemplations, building up with evocative intensity in everything from the performance to the overall arrangement.

Before long we’re in a fully loaded indie-rock arena, as ‘That’s when you know, you’ve got no place, nothing to go home to’ resounds with a piercing sense of urgency and musically euphoric support. It’s a brilliantly poignant performance, the band united in this moment of peak desperation and empowerment alike.

It’s a painful reflection on times past, a story of pain and the struggle to escape negative repetition, but it’s rooted in possibility, and it emerges by way of an absolutely addictive rock anthem. Subtle hints of metal and punk combined with the melodically alluring heart of the tune, raise up the refreshingly unmistakable vocal style and songwriting voice of the band.

An incredible song, in short – brutally honest but inspiring at its core, wrapping things up with the central sentiment of the title; a closing moment that lingers long after the music has ended. Vacation Bible School are onto something special with this. Listen loud.
