Stunning instrumental guitar music, aptly designed to create an immersive space for listeners – an impressively rooted one, but focused on that ambient connection above anything purely self-indulgent.
Rick Troutman’s solo project The Trout masters the creative realm beautifully, by way of the instrumental album Aurora Dreams.
A Thousand Dreams Away is a stunning composition to introduce things, a wholly imaginative and engaging work, with soothing organic layers and delicate playing letting the mind wander and the body feel both calm and uplifted as the music takes over.
The project is far from predictable though, as Oasis in The Night quickly takes us into a more quirky and retro-funky kind of realm, with piano and double bass lighting up a new style.
After this, Winds Of Zanzibar mellows things out, acoustic guitar strums re-grounding the process, before the second single and music video from the collection makes itself known. For Timelines, the guitar playing meanders freely, but with humility and heart once again, capturing that same sense of escapism and warmth that first introduced us to The Trout.
Chasing Smiles is another definite highlight from this album. The music blends a string-led ambiance with a distinct guitar riff and tone to help really make the composition recognisable. At the same time, the energy is welcoming, the music dreamy and alluring, and the soundscape building up beautifully along the way.
Other highlights include the beautifully atmospheric and natural-world tones of To the Sea, and the joyful uplift of a piano-led For Perico.
In reality though, there’s no limit to the creative endeavours of The Trout. The guitarist, composer and podcast host keeps artistry at the forefront, and the modesty and skill of this music speaks volumes on behalf of that.
