The Hong Kong Dollars Kings & Queens

-

Introducing a bold and scathing look at the inescapable tsunami of tech-bro tycoons controlling the culture. UK alt-rock band The Hong Kong Dollars showcase the best of their passion and unity at the helm, with the mighty and unignorable single Kings & Queens.

Focused songwriting, a very specific niche but one that’s a huge talking point here in the UK. Kings & Queens addressees the matter of corporate greed and its impact and overtaking of English football clubs.

Built around a fierce punk rock progression of distorted guitars, power chords, doubled vocals and the live crash of drums, Kings & Queens is a boldly energising anthem, with a sharp hook resolve and an explosive instrumental underneath. It’s a fine introduction to the band, The Hong Kong Dollars have a nostalgic sort of indie grit to their voice and presentation, and it’s also a poignant reflection of modern times – as was the original intention of punk rock.

Lyrically the implications are subtle and poetic here, the theme is noted by lines like ‘football is our history’, and ‘Cambridge to Sheffield FC’, but otherwise we get this anthemic looping sentiment of ‘soulless private equity’ carving out something poetic, and which actually transcends many industry barriers right now; not least of all the much-loved and often historically unifying football leagues of the UK.

Snappy and catchy writing, fierce drum, bass and guitar combinations, characterful and impassioned vocals, a slick guitar solo and a sense of realism and depth that’s powerful – and which consistently guides the energy of the track. The Hong Kong Dollars tick a lot of boxes with this release, connecting with the football fans of the UK, as well as the long-standing indie rock lovers both past and present.
