The Blankz hit the nail on the head with this latest injection of new wave power punk. Getting Over You is an immediately infectious, energizing single that comes through as part of a two-track EP. The band are adding fast and furiously to their catalogue, the good old days are well and truly back in action, and Getting Over You is easily one of their most memorable tracks to date.
Getting Over You feels like a release that’s way more about the songwriting than the genre – it rises high on the strength of the writing, as well as the musicianship and the passion. The hook is impossible to ignore, a classic ear-worm if ever there was one, and the guitar work and energy just seem to fit so well here.
The Blankz are beginning to become something well worth tuning in for as a go-to soundtrack and indeed an unmissable live band – hopefully next summer sees Festival season scoop them up.
Also included in this EP release is the song Barfly, a track with a mid-album feel musically but a totally anthemic vocal line. There’s a higher intensity to the melody, the song is simpler in terms of the notes selected – everything falls within a shorter frame, hence the mid-album reference. The benefit of this is that it’s an example of a song that’s easy to let play. For those of us who miss this sort of pop-punk – the high energy of live guitars, distortion, drums – this and in fact most songs the band offer up seem to fit the mark.
Conceptually Barfly is intriguing, and this is where the simpler melody comes in – you’re focused on the words as the rhythm and energy have a certain smoothness about them. Where Getting Over You is a totally accessible and relatable story-line, Bar Fly holds a little closer to your attention from a writing perspective – leaving you less inclined to sing along at first, but more inclined to listen intently. It later evolves to achieve that anthem-like quality and to in fact feel like the sort of alternative secret that modern rock fans tend to treasure. Both songs work well in retrospect for their contrast and yet simultaneous unity – The Blankz have a pretty unmistakable sound right now. These are easily two of their best tracks to date.
