Something like tribal electro-funk meets Gospel at first, a catchy groove with a fiercely powerful vocal lead, and a rather intoxicating balance of delicacy and sheer intensity alongside – all later evolving spectacularly through heavy rock rhythms, riffs, and vocal refrains. Sinistra captures a whole new vibe and style, with the brilliantly genre-fusing depth and snappy world-music appeal of Symbol.
From cinematic alt-pop through throat-singing, heavier rock and even metal, Symbol manages to appear as both completely eclectic and securely grounded in its rhythm, concept, and aura. That is to say, there’s something briefly quirky about the Sinistra style, but you soon forget this in favour of appreciating both the ambience and the musical and lyrical satisfaction it promises. Complexity and consistency walk side-by-side, and that’s a rare quality, and an awesomely interesting trait for this memorable introduction to Sinistra.
Performative and powerful, well-structured for repeated moments of unexpected impact, Symbol is mighty in its creativity, and outstanding in its audience awareness and that innate ability to transcend the walls of genre and deliver something completely new yet comforting; even euphoric.
With layers of voice, guitar, bass, and drums, along with subtle effects, a splendid unity between musicians, and an almost rock-opera sense of theatrical conviction, Symbol is addictively interesting, and is easily one of the best original songs to hit the alternative scene this summer. You won’t have heard anything quite like Symbol of late, but you’ll love it – I’ll take a risk with that as a bold and genuine claim. There’s meaning in the music, from lyric to arrangement to collaborative strength, and that’s incredibly valuable.
