Sig And The Fire Pilots ONE WAY UP

-

The quality of indie rock music has been off the charts lately. From one submission to the next there seem to be a multitude of bands who have found their sound and are working hard on both the songwriting and performance front. Even the production has taken a step up in recent months.

It’s a great time to get back into the scene, and on that note – an introduction to a UK band with refreshingly authentic, anthemic and infectious energy to their sound.

Fusing punk and indie nostalgia with a fun vocal chorus that’s lyric-free and unignorably catchy, Sig And The Fire Pilots’ ONE WAY UP notes a subtle twist of something like reggae or ska to the vocal – the singer is born to perform in this way, and the long-form verse melody, the inflections, even the use of reverb, all feels remisncent of the likes of Sublime or UB40. Weave in the rockier grit though, and the simple brightness and uplift of the hook, and we’re quickly in fresh territory once again.

The deciding factor is not always just my enjoyment of the track, sometimes it helps to note the response of others who hear it playing. My three-year-old son is not easy to please musically, but as I turned this one up loud, he ran into the room dancing, and openly declared it ‘his favourite song’. Strangely enough, it quickly became mine, too.

Sig And The Fire Pilots – a wonderfully creative band, with a superb single currently making its way throughout the airwaves. ONE WAY UP notes a touch of Will & The People to its structure and style, along with fantastic songwriting and vocals, and a naturally mighty hook.

Your new favourite song. You’re welcome!
