Shar misery

-

Queensland contemplative pop singer and songwriter Shar gets introspective and confronting, with the lo-fi indie-rock single misery.

Featuring uniquely long-form lyrical progressions, directly addressing another in a fairly scornful, delicate but self-empowered fashion, misery follows a sleepy guitar line, through a pattern and melody that feel somehow both bright and melancholic – almost like grunge intertwined with dream-pop.

The song rolls along in this fashion, holding close to a single tune for the most part, though shortening that approach for the chorus. Then at the half-way point, we fall back into a more nostalgic emo sound and all the more poignant lyrics. The music gets a touch of keys, almost jazz-like in their juxtaposed sense of joy, before the original pace and intensity of that vocal outpouring and the lightly distorted guitar return to the groove.

Clearly driven by a lyrical desire to present unfiltered, diary-like openness as a modern artist, Shar pours her truth and reflection into misery, and in the process stirs up a style that’s softly distinct and painfully relatable.
