Heavy atmospheric production, evolving from the simple and intimate, to the full-throttle and bass heavy. From the artist who brought us Zombie Hours and Night Lapse, Without You is a genre-blending ode to love at first sight, and it’s one of Ry‘s most creative releases yet.
Featuring diverse vocals from the softly sung to the near-falsetto, Without You notes a runtime of less than two minutes, yet still captures a sense of passionate adoration and musical progression. The opening moments lean towards the likes of Prince in melody, whispered vocal tone and emotional conviction, but once the beat hits, the track is quick to redirect itself – becoming something of an all-night-rave-ready explosion of energy.
The vocal switches gears to something more snappy and almost rapped, and the beat rolls on, until we reach this next, unexpected moment of brief tribal hand rhythms. Then the drop hits once more, and the production grows all the more intense and ambient, as we’re faced with the confessional reflection of falling hard and falling too deeply.
Refreshingly genuine in its humanity and the real, live sound of the voice, this minimalist but impactful arrangement and performance holds true to the songwriter’s vulnerability and genre-fusing approach. It’s another alternative take, but the voice and freedom of production ring loudly as Ry. The single is a worthy introduction to the 2025 album Emotional Refuge.
