Divinely smooth vocals, expressive adlibs and evocative, soulful melodic threads – Ruth Brown delivers the songwriting and musicality required to hit the space with lasting impact, as her seven-track EP A Moment Of Truth graces the airwaves.
Following her impressive stint as part of Sir Tom Jones’ team on 2012’s The Voice, Ruth Brown has continued to move from strength to strength as both a committed singer and an impassioned, natural performer. This new project has a timeless feel from the outset, the smooth jazz band-set-up of the opening and title-track setting the mood with ease, and Ruth’s instantly versatile voice meandering through the highs and lows of this modern RnB track with playfulness and grace.
After this, something of a more distinct piano-piece introduces You’re My Love, a stripped-back ode to the journey and complexity of love, and a fine example of the power and equal delicacy of Ruth’s voice and thoughtful musings – even when the full-band set-up falls away. Her ability as a singer is unrivalled, and in some ways, the very concept of A Moment Of Truth is highlighted by that. There’s nothing to hide behind, and still Ruth Brown shines with unquestionable brightness.
Next we get an old-school disco aura with a twist of funk – a well-placed moment of upbeat alternative musicianship, and a chance for Ruth Brown to exercise a more energised side of her performative eclecticism. Back For More raises the mood, and Feels Like Love extends upon that bigger rhythmic groove, evolving into a stunning highlight track, with an unmissable and rather sensational hook.
Arrangement matters, and this EP celebrates the process of holding attention well. Garden is unique, artistic and intriguing, distinct and somewhat genre-fusing, amidst a marching but freestyle rhythm and lyrical, poetic weight that’s profound, honest, and inspiring.
Ruth then brings us back to the beating heart of contemplational songwriting, with the vulnerability and longing of a mighty and timeless I Won’t Complain, before returning to the stripped-back simplicity of keys and vocals, for the Faith-driven gratitude and closing sentiments of a Gospel-kissed Conversation with GOD.
