Bringing together a refreshing level of sound-design with a confident vocal and a distinct sense of identity, Airfare unites the contemporary short-line style of rap with a more colourful, creative and organic sounding musicality. The result is a release that all at once sets the mood, impresses creatively, and keeps things moving with style and along similar performance lines to the majority of big hip hop tracks of late.
Having said that, there’s an equal clarity to Ric’s vocal presentation, his tone is unique enough to stand out, his bars lean back and forth between the familiar and that which is of a more personal story-line, and all of this works well to give the track character and recognisability.
Reaching out at a pretty perfect three minutes twenty-four, Airfare impresses musically and in terms of its vibe, before impressing lyrically and conceptually for its unusual use of poetry and modern references alike. Each repeat listen shines light on another aspect that works well. It will be interesting to hear where else the music takes Ric in the coming months.
