Folk singer and songwriter Ralph Louie lightens the mood musically, but conceptually takes on the issue of betrayal and misplaced trust, with the honest, strangely warming yet scornful Out in the Cold.
Initially laying down a simple acoustic strum and a rise-and-fall melody, led by a voice that feels a little more in line with folk pop and country than anything else, Out in the Cold persists in juxtaposing this delightful, comforting soundscape of acoustic guitar, mellow rhythms, and humble keys, with the painful ache of having been let down or feeling part of the collateral damage after someone’s selfish acts.
Beautifully modest and likable, Out in the Cold delivers a mellow sway of an organic groove, with gentle but distinct vocals guiding us through an easy melodic pattern, which ultimately leads towards an equally calm but catchy hook resolve.
Produced by Henk Pool, the second collaboration between the two creatives, Out in the Cold features a laid-back but enjoyable arrangement, and tightens the grip of that with a notably more evocative, quietly contemplative subject matter.
Inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Neil Young, Ralph Louie’s style offers a nostalgic but still original take on classic songwriting, and promises an easy to escape into vibe, whilst introducing an artist with a uniquely thoughtful, heartfelt and genuine approach to lyrical expression.
