Rachel Brunet - Oil and Water - Stereo Stickman

Rachel Brunet Oil and Water

-

Toronto songwriter and artist Rachel Brunet returns this year with an honest capture of a brilliant original single.

Emerging complete with a set of visuals depicting both storytelling scenes and Rachel and her band lost in performance, Oil and Water is a classic take on the concept of romantic mis-matches, and presents the theme amidst an uplifting country groove and catchy hook refrain.

Ultimately focused on the importance of self-value and finding someone who genuinely loves and cares for you, Oil and Water is an upbeat Americana-pop-crossover track. It’s a single loaded with emotional regret and scorn, but the music and vocal tone, Rachel’s energy and optimism, clearly leans more notably towards the empowering sense of self-worth discovered in hindsight.

An absolute earworm of a country-pop single, Oil and Water is timeless by nature, but weaves in just enough personal anecdotes, alongside Rachel’s ever-accessible leading voice, to gift the scene a warm and recognisable indie gem. The full-band set-up is instantly energising, the guitar sound is brilliant, and the song explodes into life with its hook at the forefront – an easily catchy resolve that you then anticipate returning throughout the subsequent rise and fall of the verses.

Written in collaboration with Rachel’s good friend Harold Hutchings, with seductive guitar solos and humble backing vocals further lighting up that band-led, all-together-now energy and passion, Oil and Water was produced at Haggarty Sound Studio, and highlights the very best of Rachel Brunet’s heartfelt yet professional and enjoyable approach to songwriting and performance.

“We’re like oil and water – We don’t mix, so why bother?”
