Meanwhile, contrast masterfully allows for impact, as we move from quiet to intense moments, and later to the extensive new melodic pathway of a fresh set of keys. The final third of the track is stunning, combining all former elements for an electronic-rock downpour that awakens and energises.
From the 2021 project Legendary Journey, In Pulses utilises the same piano-led urgency and dramatic rock edge, but is quick to present a distinctly heavier overall vibe, before again juxtaposing that with a sort of dreamy, gamer-like lightness along the top.
The rhythm gathers momentum, the peak drops in like a heavy-hitting floor-filler of a dance track, and despite its clear thread of creativity to Proxxes, there’s a proud versatility of style – now welcoming a finely crafted, immersive dance realm.
Consistently creating, this year’s album from Proxxes emerges under the title Ascendence, from which the high-octane and rhythmically jerky but satisfying optimism and energy of Signs of Madness aptly recreates the depths of chaos. Once again, the building blocks hold true to the Proxxes approach – the instrumental choices, the structuring, the back and forth between intensity and lightness. However, eclecticism is key, and this one delves into a whole new sense of immensity and pace.
The same album also introduced the darker ambient tones of Searing Blades – one further twist of artistry uninhibited by expectation. Here we’re gifted fresh layers of sound, the seamless blending of melody and power, and an almost Hip Hop-inspired mellow groove; which is, as ever, contrasted by the haunting notes and atmospheric traits supporting it. The rhythmic choices here are particularly interesting, original and cleverly in tune with the imagery conjured up by the title.
Proxxes achieves a fine balance of all essential elements as a contemporary DJ. The skill required to let euphoric and evocative music fully embrace its listeners, alongside the creative ambition and heart to make something that feels genuine and ethereal. Weave in that inherent versatility, and whilst the Proxxes style becomes easy to recognise, no two tracks are ever the same.
